Blood Gas Analysis- Case Study

A 50 YR, OLD MALE PATIENT COMPLAINING OF HYPOXIA, FEVER AND COUGH WAS ADMITTED TO YOUR HOSPITAL. THE LABORATORY RESULTS WERE:

PCO2 = 60 mmHg

PO2 = 30 mmHg

SO % = 45 %

CBC:

HEMOGLOBIN = 11.5 mg/dL

HEMATOCRIT = .33 vol %

WBC = 12,500/cumm

DIFFERENTIAL COUNT:

NEUTROPHILS = 66 %

MONOCYTE = 8 %

EOSINOPHIL = 1 %

BASOPHIL = 0 %

LYMPHOCTES =25 %

FBS = 5.2 mmol/L

BUA = 10 mg/dL

BUN = 30 mg/dL

CREATININE = 5 mg/dL

TAG = 1 mg/dL

CHOLESTEROL = 140 mg/dL

ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:

  1. WHAT IS THE pH OF BLOOD?
  2. WHAT COULD BE THE POSSIBLE DIAGNOSIS OF THE PATIENT? DEFEND YOUR ANSWER.
